About Alicia
Alicia Myers has called Dyer's 2nd Ward home since 2015, and in that time she's built the kind of life rooted in showing up — for her family, her students, and her neighbors.
Family First
Alicia is a mother of four, and her home doesn't stop there. She's also an animal foster, opening her house to pets in need of a soft landing on their way to a permanent family. It's a fitting extension of who she is: someone who sees someone — or something — that needs help, and steps in.
A Career Built on Understanding People
Alicia has spent nearly 25 years as a K–12 educator, the last decade of it in special education across Indiana and Illinois. She holds two master's degrees — one in special education and one in administration and leadership — a combination that reflects both her hands-on classroom experience and her drive to make change at a systems level.
Her approach to discipline and leadership has always started the same way: with communication first. Behavior comes from somewhere, she believes, and understanding the root cause — not just reacting to what's on the surface. That's how you build the trust and respect that real progress depends on. She spent 16 years teaching in Hammond schools before moving on, and she's now pursuing building-level and coordinator roles — from principal to special education coordinator to IB PYP coordinator — carrying that same philosophy of trust and follow-through into school leadership.
An Advocate at Heart
Alicia describes herself simply: an advocate. That thread runs through everything she does. As Chair of Democrats for Dyer, she's helped build a local political organization from the ground up. As Vice President of the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women, and as the founding chapter leader of what's now the Northwest Indiana Women's Caucus (serving Lake and Porter Counties), she's created a space for women across the region to organize, mentor each other, and get more involved in civic life.
Why the 2nd Ward
Alicia is running for Dyer Town Council's 2nd Ward seat as part of the “People Over Politics” slate, alongside Joe Douglas and Taylor Gibson. Her campaign centers on the issues she hears about from her own neighbors: responsible development along Sheffield Avenue, real transparency from local government, and growth that puts the community first rather than treating it as an afterthought.
It's the natural next step for someone who has spent her whole career — in the classroom, in her community organizations, and in her own home — doing the same thing: listening first, then showing up to help.
